I’m in a chat group and people were talking about LGBT. One person was saying rather calmly & matter of fact-ly that he doesn’t support LGBT:
“apple supports lgbt, their CEO is I know..if u heard n saw the news”
Which created a barrage of lynches from the mob: “Whats wrong with being an lgb or a t?”
“I don’t see why people cannot be lesbian or gay…”
“you don’t have to say negatively”
The entire exchange, thankfully, was still quite civil. But I think what’s worrying is that in the quest to be progressive, we’ve become divisive.
This is the inevitable reality of the world we will start living in.
It is not just the progressives who have the tendency to behave like this; the same type of people exist on the conservative side too. Identifying yourself to a cause does not equate to engaging in activism with no without regard given to the counterparty’s opinion. After all, S R Covey’s teachings also tell us to “seek first to understand, then to be understood”.
End-Note: Do not let “LGBT” contextualise your thoughts on this matter. Replace it with any other modern cause and you’ll likely get the same type of conversation.
